The Punjab government has approved the pilot phase of its ambitious e-taxi project, which will introduce 1,100 electric taxis along with solar-powered charging stations across the province. The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, where key mass transit initiatives were reviewed.
During the session, officials presented the feasibility report for the Yellow Line mass transit system, a major infrastructure project aimed at improving public transportation in the region. The meeting also included a detailed briefing on the e-taxi project, which is part of Punjab’s broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and promote eco-friendly commuting options.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif directed authorities to prioritize public convenience in route planning and ordered the immediate commencement of the Yellow Line project, which will connect Jinnah Terminal to Harbanspura. She also called for a detailed report on expanding mass transit services to Gujranwala, indicating plans for future network growth.
Under the e-taxi scheme, the Punjab government will provide subsidies to encourage adoption, making the initiative more accessible while supporting job creation in the green transport sector.
The approval of the e-taxi pilot project marks a major milestone in Punjab’s efforts to modernize its transport infrastructure while addressing environmental concerns. With solar-powered charging stations and a focus on affordability, the initiative is expected to set a precedent for sustainable mobility solutions in Pakistan.
